Jump for Joy

Starting earlier this year, I began having trouble doing things that would ordinarily be easy, that should be easy.  Examples include jumping, punching, kicking, swimming . . . even clearing  my throat (aka hocking up a loogie). Today at the gym I spent an entire hour trying to jump.   Jumping First, a little more detail on these activities, starting with jumping.  There are many ways to jump--jumpng jacks, hop on one foot, hop on two feet, broad jump.  Jumping jacks were easy when I started in Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) eight years ago.  It doesn't seem all that long ago, but to help put it in perspective, that was years before Covid, and my kids were in third and sixth grade.  In any case, eight years is a lot of time for the disease to progress.  Along the way, jumping jacks gradually became more difficult.  Same with jumping rope--at first it was easy, it gradually became more and more challenging, and now I don't even bother with it a...

Pedaling for Parkinson's -- along Route 66

[first section previously published 12/2/2026 on Facebook] The World Parkinson Congress (WPC) has an interesting history with regard to cycling--see https://wpc2026.org/page/pedal.  The reason for my fundraiser is spelled out in the GoFundMe (see link below), but it boils down to 1) lots of extra expenses, such as sleeping in hotels for well over a month, and 2) loss of income for part of that month, since I will have to take unpaid leave after I use up all my vacation days. You might think that the most important thing is the amount of money we can raise, but at this early stage, publicity is even more imortant.  While donations are awesome and will be needed, imagine how easy this would be with a sufficiently large group of donors . . . 10,000 or more $1 donations.  In any case, I get to endure the pain of 30+ days biking from Chicago to Phoenix, while you get to relax in a nice, comfortable chair . . . and help me with my fundraising 🙂 Please share, forward, and other...

Gunsite 250

Gunsite 250 I almost did not go. The trip was not planned very far in advance, and my main goal was to get Charlie into the youth 250 class.  Money has been tight, and I was planning to spend the week working.  I asked for and received approval to work remotely . . . and then spent a few weeks pondering what I should do.  All of this was really just a smoke screen that I was using to hide the real issue:  fear.  Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of being embarassed in front of my peers, fear of not meeting the instructors' expectations. Fear that I would not be able to find even a small piece of the old me, and that there was nothing left to find.  Fear that the younger, healthier "two-gun Greg" from years ago at a place that no longer exists, was simply dead and gone.  I did not expect to finish the week.  To be honest, I wondered if I would make it through the first day.
