Closing 2023 with a Ragnar

For better or worse, Facebook has brought us many things. One of those things is the birthday fundraiser; at least, I had never heard of it before I saw it on Facebook.

For my birthday fundraiser, I am once again raising money for the Michael J Fox Foundation. Team Synapse is back, and I am on the hook for raising at least $1200. That should be easy, so let's blow it out of the water!

This is a short excerpt from Bill's post at the MJFF blog: Team Synapse (an incredible team of individuals from across the U.S. who are all living with PD) is expanding and coming together again on December 1 and 2, 2023 to take on the last relay race of the year, the Ragnar Trail Florida. Team Synapse will form two teams of eight to take on the 32-hour race in Alafia River State Park. Each team member will have to complete a series of three different trail runs, for a total of 16 miles per runner.

The good, the bad, and the ugly

I took a somewhat nasty fall on a trail run last night. The plan was to go out about three miles, then turn around and head back to the trailhead. I was about 2 miles into it, maybe 2.1, when I stumbled over a rock. Unlike the fall at the beginning of the Sawmill half, where I could not move my foot and fell straight down onto the path in front of me, this time I was able to try to keep my feet. I think if the path in front of me had been sidewalk quality, I would have been successful. However, the trail was littered with rocks, and stepping on them did not help at all. Compounding the situation, the trail was curving left at that spot, so my straight-ahead movement led me off-trail to the right, into some biger rocks. ER Visit - May 2024

Ever since my abdominal surgery in August 2020, I have had occasional  pains--usually mild--in my stomach and abdominal cavity in general.  Most of those pains have been due to excessive crunching/slouching, excessive eating, or excessive abs workouts.  This past Sunday (May 19) my parents came to town to celebrate my daughter's high school graduation.  We went to the Yard House by the Linq, and I had a cheeseburger.  Nothing fancy, except that I upgraded from regular fries to truffle fries.  I also ate some pieces of a huge pretzel appetizer that we all shared, plus the remains of my daughter's dessert cake and ice cream.  I knew what was in store for me--a little pain following a minor bout of over-eating.   I went home that night, slept well, and got up early for the 5 AM boot camp class at Camp Rhino.. All Those Years

The Big E As I go to the gym I find that I can generally do most of what is asked of me.  It's not that the trainers don't push me or challenge me--they certainly do, more than I would push myself.  But there are so many muscles to strengthen, so many ways to work on endurance, it just is not possible to stay on top of everything.  Having said that, I must also admit to having my own streak of laziness, which I must constantly fight against. I periodically find something I'm bad at, muscles that are just plain weak.  For example, back in the early days of my involvement with Rock Steady Boxing (RSB), we did more than just boxing.  One day we did a bunch of squats and lunges, and the next day I felt some soreness in my legs.  Having done many squats and lunges all those years ago in the Navy, I knew the solution--do more of those exercises.  So I added them to my at-home workouts, just one set of 50 each, two days per week.  Voila, no more sore leg...
