2025 Las Vegas Spartan Sprint

I had planned to skip the Las Vegas Spartan races this year due to a lingering finger issue from my previous race in July 2024, but then I got a unique opportunity to participate with my daughter, so of course I jumped on that.  We finished in just under 2 hours, at 1:58:24 and 1516 and 1517/1963 for the Open and 996/1225 for men, 521/738 for women.  Here is a breakdown of the obstacles:

4 ft wall - passed

hurdles - passed

barbed wire crawl - passed

monkey bars - failed

slip wall - passed

plate drag - passed

spear throw - passed

sandbag carry - passed

Atlas carry - failed; I was able to roll the ball up onto my thigh as in the past, but then unlike those past races, I could not stand up with it.

multi-rig - failed

Z wall - failed

inverted wall - passed; I actually got stuck at the top and asked the guy next to me for help after he got over.  He asked me why I was shaking--I didn't realize that I was--and he was suprised to hear that I have Parkinsons.

bucket carry - passed

vertical cargo - passed

rope climb - failed

Hercules hoist - passed; I have had trouble with this a few times, but not today,

A-frame cargo - passed

fire jump - passed

I'm very proud of Tara, since this is not really her thing.  Plus she has a mild fear of heights, but she totally conquered that!

ER Visit - May 2024

Ever since my abdominal surgery in August 2020, I have had occasional  pains--usually mild--in my stomach and abdominal cavity in general.  Most of those pains have been due to excessive crunching/slouching, excessive eating, or excessive abs workouts.  This past Sunday (May 19) my parents came to town to celebrate my daughter's high school graduation.  We went to the Yard House by the Linq, and I had a cheeseburger.  Nothing fancy, except that I upgraded from regular fries to truffle fries.  I also ate some pieces of a huge pretzel appetizer that we all shared, plus the remains of my daughter's dessert cake and ice cream.  I knew what was in store for me--a little pain following a minor bout of over-eating.   I went home that night, slept well, and got up early for the 5 AM boot camp class at Camp Rhino.. The good, the bad, and the ugly

I took a somewhat nasty fall on a trail run last night. The plan was to go out about three miles, then turn around and head back to the trailhead. I was about 2 miles into it, maybe 2.1, when I stumbled over a rock. Unlike the fall at the beginning of the Sawmill half, where I could not move my foot and fell straight down onto the path in front of me, this time I was able to try to keep my feet. I think if the path in front of me had been sidewalk quality, I would have been successful. However, the trail was littered with rocks, and stepping on them did not help at all. Compounding the situation, the trail was curving left at that spot, so my straight-ahead movement led me off-trail to the right, into some biger rocks. By biggger, I mean one to two feet across, if memory serves. I rolled a bit to the right as I fell, resulting in the worst of the impact hitting primarily my right shoulder, and also ribs and calf. When I write my blog entries, I try to be as unbiased and accurate as possible.  Sometimes events make me look good, sometimes bad, but it's never about beating myself up, and it's never about bragging.  Except today.  I'm feeling really good about this particular event, so I'm gonna brag.  Just a little. First the background.  This part of the continuing saga of the injured left little finger, begun in previous entries.  I have been trying to make progress on diagnosis and treatment, but it has been difficult and slow.  Who knew the little finger could present such a big challenge?  In spite of the fact that it never was broken, it has been splinted virtually nonstop for over two months.  In that time I have used three different types of splint: 1) the traditional "tie or tape it to something stiff" variety; 2) the thermal-molded plastic or fabric variety; and 3) the sprin-mechanism variety.  The goal at this point is not to keep it str...
